How To Maximize Your Insurance Benefits for Orthodontics

Meet Dr. Kevin Pickett

Dr. Kevin Pickett’s interest in orthodontics began at an early age. As a child, he loved listening to stories his uncle would tell him of working as a dentist. He decided to follow in his footsteps by attending the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and continuing his education there with a Master of Science degree and Certificate in Orthodontics.

Through his dedication to his patients and commitment to honesty, he has built a reputation for providing exceptional orthodontic care.

Dr. Pickett received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1993, where he graduated summa cum laude. He then attended the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, graduating with honors in 1997. Dr. Pickett received his Master of Science degree and his Certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 2000.

While in dental school, Dr. Pickett served as president of the student body, president of the Psi Omega fraternity, and president of the Dental Research Group. Dr. Pickett received the Kramer Award of Excellence, given to one student each year for outstanding achievement. He was also the recipient of the Schneyer Award for the highest scholastic achievement in the basic sciences.

He was inducted into OKU (the dental scholastic honor society), received the Award of Excellence in Research, and received the American Association of Orthodontists Award. Dr. Pickett received the Alabama Dental Association Student Leadership Award, and he was also awarded the coveted Dean’s Medal for outstanding scholarship and leadership.

How To Maximize Your Insurance Benefits for Orthodontics

Why Choose an Orthodontist Over a Dentist?

As a parent, you might wonder whether to consult a dentist or an orthodontist for your child's dental needs. While both professionals are essential for maintaining oral health, their areas of expertise differ significantly.

Dentists focus on overall oral health, providing services such as cleanings, fillings, and preventive care. Orthodontists, on the other hand, specialize in diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities. This specialization requires additional years of training beyond dental school, focusing exclusively on tooth and jaw alignment. Orthodontists are experts in dental development and are especially trained to diagnose and treat crooked teeth, bad bites, and poorly aligned jaws.

Choosing an orthodontist ensures that your child receives care from a specialist dedicated to correcting misaligned teeth and jaws, leading to improved function and aesthetics. Orthodontists are specialists in delivering all orthodontic treatment options, whether for children or adults.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

At Pickett Orthodontics, we offer a variety of treatment options tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient.

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. These braces have a metal bracket with elastic ties (also known as rubber bands) holding the wire onto the metal brackets.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional metal braces but are made from a clear or tooth-colored material, making them less noticeable. They are a popular choice for patients seeking a more discreet option.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign®, are a series of custom-made, removable trays that gradually straighten teeth. They are virtually invisible and can be removed for eating and brushing, offering flexibility and convenience. Clear aligners are generally not used for complex orthodontic cases, such as when extractions, jaw surgery, or palate expansion are necessary.
